Defense Minister Khawaja Asif reacted to the sentences given to 25 individuals involved in the 9th May riots, stating that only the workers who were used have now been brought to justice by the law.
In a message shared by him on the social media platform X, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said, "Today, 25 individuals involved in the tragic incident of May 9 have been sentenced. Ideally, justice should have been served promptly, just like in the United States and the United Kingdom."
In his message, the Defense Minister said that the delay had boosted the morale of the accused and their facilitators, and even condemnation of the tragic day was avoided.
The Defense Minister further stated that until the law takes action against the masterminds of this horrific day, this matter will not come to an end. Such elements will continue to raise the morale of those who are enemies of the nation, according to him.
Earlier, in a significant development following the tragic events of 9th May 2023, the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) has announced sentences for 25 individuals involved in the politically provoked violence and arson that shook Pakistan.The incidents, which included attacks on military installations and the desecration of monuments dedicated to fallen soldiers, marked a dark chapter in the nation’s history. These actions were part of a politically orchestrated campaign to impose violence and political terrorism.
On 13th December 2024, a seven-member Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan directed that all pending cases related to the 9th May tragedy be finalized, with judgments to be delivered on the individuals involved in the violent incidents. The FGCM has now issued sentences for the first batch of 25 accused, after a thorough investigation, collection of irrefutable evidence, and adherence to legal procedures.
