WhatsApp ends support for these mobile phones starting January 2025

Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced its decision to stop supporting several older smartphone models from January 1, 2025. The move is part of the platform's effort to adapt to newer technologies and enhance its services globally, including in Pakistan.

Devices operating on outdated systems that are no longer eligible for updates will lose access to the app, preventing users from installing future WhatsApp updates or using its features.

Affected Devices

The following phones will no longer support WhatsApp starting January 1, 2025:

Samsung:

• Galaxy S3
• Galaxy Note 2
• Galaxy Ace 3
• Galaxy S4 Mini

Motorola:

• Moto G (1st Gen)
• Razr HD
• Moto E (2014)

HTC:

• One X
• One X+
• Desire 500
• Desire 601

LG:

• Optimus G
• Nexus 4
• G2 Mini
• L90

Sony:

• Xperia Z
• Xperia SP
• Xperia T
• Xperia V

Apple:

• iPhone 5s
• iPhone 6
• iPhone 6 Plus

From May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will also end support for iOS versions below 15.1. Currently, the app is compatible with iOS 12 and later, but the upcoming update will require devices to operate on iOS 15.1 or higher. As a result, users with iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which can only run iOS 12.5.7, will lose access to WhatsApp.

Why Support is Ending

This update aligns with WhatsApp’s focus on integrating updated APIs and advanced technologies available in modern operating systems. Such updates improve app performance, enable new features, and provide a smoother user experience.

The company noted that older operating systems lack the necessary APIs for these advancements, prompting a shift to more recent platforms. WhatsApp also highlighted that a small portion of its user base relies on older systems, allowing it to prioritize resources for users on newer devices.
