Nail colour changes may signal hidden health problems

Certain nail colours may serve as early warning signs of potentially life-threatening illnesses.

Health experts have advised people to closely monitor their fingernails for unusual changes, warning that alterations in nail colour, texture, or shape can sometimes indicate serious underlying medical conditions.

According to specialists, certain nail colours may serve as early warning signs of potentially life-threatening illnesses, making routine self-checks an important part of personal health awareness.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) has highlighted on its official website that changes in nails should not be ignored.

“Have you noticed a change to any of your nails lately? A change in colour, texture, or shape can be harmless, but it can also be a sign of disease. If you notice any of the following changes to a fingernail or toenail, it’s time to see a board-certified dermatologist,” the AAD stated.

The association further explained that diseases inside the body can directly affect nail appearance, with specific colour changes linked to particular health conditions.

Nail Colours That May Indicate Health Risks

White Nails:

The AAD notes that white nails may point to liver disease or diabetes. This sign is more commonly associated with cirrhosis, the advanced stage of liver disease.

Half Pink, Half White Nails:

A nail appearance that is partly pink and partly white can be a sign of kidney disease. The AAD describes this as a white upper portion with a normal to reddish-brown colour beneath.

Yellow Nails:

Yellow discoloration may indicate lung disease and is often linked to issues in the circulatory or lymphatic systems. However, experts add that yellow nails can also result from fungal infections or smoking.

Dark or Dusky Red Streaks:

A new or changing dark streak beneath a nail may signal melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Health authorities, including the UK’s NHS, advise seeking medical attention if a dark area appears under a nail without any injury.

Other Concerning Nail Colour Changes

Blue nails: May indicate low oxygen levels in the blood.

Pale nails: Could be a sign of anaemia or iron deficiency.

Blue half-moons: May suggest possible poisoning.

Medical experts stress that while not every nail change is dangerous, persistent or unusual discoloration should never be ignored. Consulting a qualified healthcare professional can help ensure early diagnosis and timely treatment.
