England has taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing three-match Test series after a commanding 323-run victory over New Zealand in the second Test at the Basin Reserve.
Root’s brilliance, along with England’s clinical bowling performance, left New Zealand struggling, despite a courageous century from Tom Blundell.
Resuming Day 3 on 73, Joe Root reached his century with a creative reverse ramp shot, showcasing his dominance. His knock of 100 off 127 balls included a quick 100-run partnership with captain Ben Stokes, who played an aggressive role. England’s aggressive approach saw them add 49 runs in just 6.3 overs before declaring with a formidable target of 583.
New Zealand’s chase faltered early. Chris Woakes struck quickly, dismissing Devon Conway for a duck and removing Kane Williamson soon after, leaving the Kiwis at 25/2. Brydon Carse further reduced the hosts to 33/3 with a sharp catch off Tom Latham.
Blundell, however, fought back, capitalizing on an early drop. His counterattacking century, including two big sixes, revived New Zealand’s hopes. Supported by Nathan Smith, who contributed to a 97-run partnership, Blundell’s performance echoed his debut century at this venue in 2017.
But England’s bowlers remained relentless. Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, and Ben Stokes took regular wickets. Stokes sealed the victory, dismissing New Zealand’s tail with his signature short-ball strategy.
Tim Southee received a heartfelt send-off in his final Basin Reserve appearance, but New Zealand’s resistance ended at 280 all out.
Harry Brook was named Player of the Match for his blistering 123 runs in the first innings and 55 in the second. With one Test left, England will aim to complete a series whitewash.
