Toyota is entering the electric vehicle market by announcing plans to create an electric version of their popular Hilux model by 2025. This decision aligns Toyota with competitors like Isuzu, who also intend to launch an electric version of their D-Max around the same time.
The significant announcement was made by Noriaki Yamashita, who leads Toyota's operations in Thailand. This move represents a major step for Toyota towards producing electric vehicles.
Before mass-producing the electric Hilux, Toyota wants to assess its performance in real-world conditions. They will conduct tests on twelve vehicles in Pattaya, Thailand, to evaluate how well they function as public transportation. This testing phase will allow Toyota to identify and address any issues before moving forward with full-scale production.
A Glimpse into the Future
Toyota hasn't disclosed specific details about the production model of the electric Hilux or its capabilities. However, they provided a glimpse with the Hilux Revo BEV Urban Taxi Concept, which is an electric vehicle featuring a single-cab design.Apart from electric vehicles, Toyota is also exploring hydrogen fuel-cell technology for the Hilux and has developed a mild-hybrid version of the current turbo-diesel engine for Australia.
Initially, there were doubts about how well an electric utility vehicle like the Hilux would perform, but Toyota assures that their prototype handles well and has sufficient torque for the job.
This move by Toyota extends beyond one vehicle. They plan to electrify most of their models by 2030, aligning with the industry's shift towards more environmentally friendly options.
