The Sindh government has accelerated preparations to launch Pakistan’s first government-run taxi service, with plans to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) taxi fleet by December 2025.
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Minister for Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, where officials were briefed on the progress of ongoing transport projects.
Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that this will be the first-ever official taxi service in Pakistan, introduced under the vision of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who aims to provide citizens with modern and eco-friendly transport facilities.
In the initial phase, women-only EV taxis will be launched, expanding on the success of previous initiatives such as the Pink Bus Service for women and the Pink Scooty Program, which received strong public appreciation.
He added that Karachi will soon see the addition of double-decker buses and more EV buses, alongside the development of EV charging stations and supporting infrastructure.
The Sindh government reaffirmed its commitment to provide safe, affordable, and high-quality transport services for women, while also inviting international investors to explore wide-ranging opportunities in the province’s growing transport sector.
