The Sindh Cane Commissioner has provided an update to the federal government regarding the province’s sugar stock.
According to the details, the cane commissioner has submitted a weekly report on sugar reserves to both federal and provincial authorities.
As per the report, sugar mills in Sindh have produced 1.543 million metric tonnes of sugar during the ongoing crushing season.
Over the past four months, approximately 511,362 metric tonnes of sugar have been sold by sugar mills, while 1.278 million metric tonnes remain in stock across 34 mills, as stated in a letter from the Sindh Cane Commissioner to the federal and provincial governments.
Additionally, Sindh’s sugar mills still have 246,000 metric tonnes of last year’s sugar stock available.
On February 7, reports indicated that the Sindh government has opted not to fix the sugarcane support price for FY2024-25.
Previously, the Sindh government determined the sugarcane support price annually, but due to a recent agreement with the IMF, the province has decided not to set a fixed rate this year.
This decision was made during a meeting of the Sindh government, which deliberated on the matter of sugarcane pricing. The cabinet concluded that the government would not regulate the sugarcane price this year.
Meanwhile, the agriculture department has stated that if any other province decides to fix the sugarcane support price, the matter will be brought before the Sindh cabinet again for reconsideration.
