The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted higher-than-normal monsoon rainfall in 2025, with an expected 10% increase in Upper Sindh and up to 30% more rain in Southern Sindh. Karachi does not have the infrastructure to manage rainfall above 45mm per hour.
This update came during a meeting led by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah to check on the province’s monsoon preparations. The Meteorological Department shared that a low-pressure system is forming earlier than usual in southern Pakistan, which means there could be more rain than normal in July and August.
The forecast points to a 20–30% rise in rainfall in Southern Sindh and about 10% more in Upper Sindh. Lower Sindh areas could see urban flooding due to the Indus River overflowing and hill torrents.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah told all departments to complete an emergency plan together, make sure stormwater drains are cleaned, inspect pumping stations, and keep rescue teams ready. The cleaning of drains started on June 20 and will continue until September 15.
