MIAMI: Jackie Bezos, the mother of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, passed away at the age of 78 after a long struggle with Lewy body dementia. Her passing was confirmed on August 14 by the Bezos Family Foundation, at her residence in Miami.
In his tribute shared on Instagram, Jeff Bezos wrote:
“Her adulthood started a little bit early when she became my mum at the tender age of 17. That couldn’t have been easy, but she made it all work. She pounced on the job of loving me with ferocity, brought my amazing dad onto the team a few years later, and then added my sister and brother to her list of people to love, guard, and nourish. For the rest of her life, that list of people to love never stopped growing. She always gave so much more than she ever asked for.
After a long fight with Lewy Body Dementia, she passed away today, surrounded by so many of us who loved her her kids, grandkids, and my dad. I know she felt our love in those final moments. We were all so lucky to be in her life. I hold her safe in my heart forever.

Following her passing, the Bezos Family Foundation described Jackie’s final years as a quiet yet powerful closing chapter to a life defined by grit, kindness, and service to others.
Jackie’s journey began in New Mexico, where she became a mother at just 17. She later married Miguel Bezos, who adopted Jeff and became an essential guiding force in his life. In her later years, Jackie devoted herself to philanthropic work, particularly through the family foundation focused on empowering young people and advancing education across communities.
Her death comes at a poignant time just weeks after Jeff Bezos’s marriage to Lauren Sánchez marking a moment of deep personal loss amid celebration.
Jackie’s legacy is a testament to quiet strength and devoted service a woman who nurtured her family and made meaningful contributions far beyond her own home. She will be fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
