According to official data, 1.49 million mobile handsets were assembled locally in August 2024, compared to just 0.1 million imported commercially. Of the total locally produced handsets, 7.71 million were 2G devices, and 12.73 million were smartphones.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) data further revealed that 62 percent of mobile devices on Pakistan’s network are smartphones, while 38 percent are 2G handsets.
Meanwhile, Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $143.889 million in the first two months (July-August) of the 2024-25 fiscal year. This represents a 19.82 percent decline compared to the $179.453 million spent on imports during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
In terms of local currency, mobile phone imports during the first two months of the current fiscal year amounted to Rs. 40.069 billion, marking a 22.73 percent drop from Rs. 51.853 billion recorded in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
