Turnberry, Scotland: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that addressing hunger in Gaza must be the world’s top priority, directly contradicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that there is no starvation in the territory.
Speaking from his golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland, during a joint appearance with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump emphasized the urgent need to feed Gaza's population.
"We can save a lot of people (in Gaza). I mean, some of those kids are—that's real starvation stuff. I see it. And you can't fake that."
Trump announced that the United States had allocated $60 million in humanitarian aid and called on other countries to contribute more. He praised Starmer for offering British support, saying, “And the Prime Minister is going to help us. They’re very effective with that. You’ve done that before.”
The remarks come amid worsening conditions in Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 14 more people mostly children died in the past 24 hours due to starvation and malnutrition, bringing the total death toll from hunger to 147, including 88 children.
Israel imposed a full blockade on Gaza in early March, easing it in May but maintaining strict limitations on supplies. Aid organizations say deliveries remain insufficient to prevent widespread malnutrition.
Trump was also asked whether he accepted Netanyahu’s recent claim that there is no starvation in Gaza.
“I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly,” Trump responded. “Cause those children look very hungry.”
Netanyahu, speaking a day earlier at a summit in Jerusalem, rejected international criticism, saying, “There is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza.”
On the other side, On Monday Israeli forces killed at least 92 Palestinians across Gaza, including 41 aid seekers, despite “pauses” in fighting to deliver essential humanitarian aid. An Israeli settler has shot dead Palestinian activist and teacher Odeh Muhammad Hadalin in Masafer Yatta in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli human rights groups B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights release reports saying Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 59,921 people and wounded 145,233.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas militants rampaged through southern Israel in October, 2023.
