Paris: French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has resigned just one month after taking office, plunging the country into renewed political turmoil and marking yet another setback for President Emmanuel Macron’s struggling administration.
Lecornu, 41, a former defense minister and close Macron ally, stepped down just a day after the President announced a controversial new cabinet lineup that drew widespread criticism across the political spectrum. The cabinet was set to hold its first official meeting on Monday.
His resignation is the fifth by a French prime minister in just two years, and the third failed attempt by Macron to establish a stable minority government.
Lecornu had been scheduled to address the National Assembly on Tuesday to outline his government's legislative agenda. That speech has now been canceled.
Financial markets responded swiftly to the news, with French 10-year bond yields rising nine basis points to 3.6%, reflecting investor anxiety. The spread over German bonds — a key indicator of France’s fiscal risk — widened to over 89 basis points, the highest level since late 2024.
