Netflix is undergoing significant changes as it phases out its basic plan, starting with Canada and the UK. Although the Basic Plan has already been unavailable for new users since last summer, existing subscribers are still using it.
However, Netflix intends to completely discontinue the Basic Plan, signaling a shift in focus towards ad-supported content.
The decision aligns with the company's strategy, as ad-based subscriptions have seen a remarkable 70% growth quarter over quarter, contributing to 40% of all new sign-ups in relevant markets.
Once the Basic plan is fully discontinued, subscribers will have limited choices, with the ad-free experience confined to the Standard and Premium plans.
The Standard plan, priced at $15.49 per month, offers full HD streaming and allows simultaneous use on two devices. The Premium level, costing $22.99 monthly, enhances the viewing experience with Ultra HD, streaming on up to six devices, and additional member choices.
While this might be perceived as a reduction in options, it aligns with Netflix's strategic direction. Moreover, the streaming giant continues to invest heavily in compelling content, with upcoming releases like Squid Game Season 2 in 2024 and an exclusive streaming rights deal for WWE RAW in 2025.
