Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed their unwavering support for the freedom struggle of Jammu and Kashmir on the 76th anniversary of the United Nations resolution affirming the right to self-determination.
This day, commemorated annually on January 5, marks the 1949 UN resolution promising a fair plebiscite for the region's people.
In their speeches, the leaders strongly criticized ongoing human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), particularly after India’s unilateral actions on August 5, 2019. These actions altered the region’s demographic and political landscape.
President Zardari praised the resilience of the Kashmiri people, emphasizing that decades of oppression have not diminished their resolve for self-determination. He urged the international community, especially the United Nations, to fulfill its responsibility toward Kashmiris.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that self-determination is a fundamental principle of the UN Charter. He expressed regret that over seven decades have passed without granting this basic right to the people of Kashmir. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to providing moral, political, and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri cause.
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), rallies and events were held to observe the day, calling for international action in line with UN resolutions. The AJK Legislative Assembly held a special session to address human rights violations in IIOJK and urged the UN to honor its promises.
In IIOJK, posters demanding the resolution of the Kashmir issue appeared, emphasizing that self-determination is a basic human right. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference called for global solidarity with Kashmiris to end India’s control and recognize their right to freedom.
Pakistan continues to advocate for the Kashmir cause, standing firm in its support for the oppressed people of the region.
