A car bombing targeting a bustling market in northern Syria has claimed the lives of at least seven people. The attack, which occurred in the town of Azaz in Aleppo province near the Turkish border, also left several others injured. The perpetrators of the attack remain unclear in the town, which is governed by pro-Turkish militias engaged in conflict against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Turkish forces and their proxies govern large areas of Syria along the shared border between the two countries. At the time of the explosion, the market was bustling with shoppers purchasing new clothes for their children in preparation for Eid al-Fitr, which commemorates the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan next month.

The White Helmets, a volunteer rescue group operating in Syria, reported that two children were among the deceased. Footage captured in the aftermath depicted bodies strewn on the ground, damaged buildings, and the remnants of a car engulfed in flames.

No group has admitted responsibility for the attack.

The Syrian Interim Government, an opposition group claiming to be the country's legitimate authority, is headquartered in Azaz. Analysts describe Azaz as strategically significant in the context of the civil war due to its proximity to the Turkish border and its importance as a supply route.

Bombs targeting crowded civilian areas are a frequent occurrence in Syria's northwest border region, including Azaz. In 2017, a car bomb detonated outside the town's courthouse, resulting in the deaths of more than 40 people.

The Islamic State group, which captured the town in 2013 and briefly held it, claimed responsibility for the attack.
