In a surprising development, major automakers in Pakistan, including Toyota, Honda, Kia, and Suzuki, have initiated a fierce price battle, slashing the prices of several popular models. This move comes in response to recent regulatory changes and heightened market competition, aiming to lower costs for consumers.
Among the notable reductions, Kia stands out by reducing the price of its KIA Stonic model by an impressive 24%, equivalent to 1.5 million rupees. Suzuki follows closely with a 13% decrease in the price of its Swift GLX CVT variant. Toyota and Honda also join in, albeit with more modest reductions of 3% for their Yaris 1.3 CVT and Honda City CVT models, respectively.
Despite varying degrees of price cuts, the post-reduction prices of all four cars now fall within a narrow range of Rs4.69 million to Rs4.77 million. This deliberate alignment aims to stay below the ex-GST price cap of Rs4 million, a regulation introduced in March 2024.
This price war traces back to regulatory changes implemented in March 2023, which significantly increased GST for cars with engine capacities exceeding 1400cc and all SUVs. However, the regulatory landscape shifted again in March 2024 with the introduction of a GST cap at 25% of the ex-GST price of Rs4 million, evening the playing field.
Seizing the opportunity, Kia drastically reduced the price of its Stonic model to comply with the new limit, prompting Suzuki to follow suit with price reductions for its Swift top variant.
The question now is whether Toyota and Honda will further reduce prices on their Yaris and City models to compete with the aggressively priced Stonic and Swift.
With consumers set to benefit from these price cuts, the automotive market in Pakistan is witnessing intense competition as manufacturers vie for market share and customer loyalty in the new regulatory environment.
