WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump is set to make his first flight aboard a newly acquired Air Force One aircraft gifted by Qatar later this week, a move that has triggered renewed political and ethical scrutiny over foreign donations to U.S. officials.

Trump will travel Wednesday to North Dakota for an event marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, according to a White House official speaking to AFP.

The aircraft is a modified Boeing 747 that previously served Qatar’s leadership. Trump praised the Gulf nation earlier this month when the plane was unveiled, calling Qatar “so nice and providing” for offering the jet. He also personally selected its red, white, and blue livery.

Since his first term, Trump has pushed for replacing the aging Air Force One fleet and has long advocated for upgraded presidential aircraft.

However, the arrangement has sparked criticism from opponents who have raised ethical, constitutional, and national security concerns over a foreign government providing an aircraft valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.

The U.S. Constitution prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign states without congressional approval, including “any present, Emolument, Office, or Title.”

The administration has said the aircraft was provided as a direct gift to the U.S. Department of Defense and has also indicated it could eventually be transferred to Trump’s presidential library, a position that has further intensified scrutiny.

The Qatar-donated jet is intended as a temporary solution until Boeing delivers two new 747-8 aircraft designated for presidential use. The program has faced repeated delays and cost overruns.
