Israel and Hamas are reportedly close to finalizing a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the 15-month-long conflict in Gaza.
The proposed deal, brokered by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, includes Hamas releasing hostages in exchange for halting Israeli military operations in Gaza and freeing Palestinian prisoners.
U.S. President Joe Biden has signaled that the agreement is near, with both the outgoing and incoming U.S. administrations pushing for its conclusion before the presidential inauguration on January 20.
Under the agreement, Hamas would release 33 hostages, including women and children, while Israel would free up to 1,000 Palestinian detainees. Additionally, Israel would begin a gradual military withdrawal from Gaza, enabling increased humanitarian aid for Palestinians.
The deal is also expected to ease tensions in the broader Middle East, where the conflict has intensified in the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, raising fears of a larger war involving Iran.
The Israeli offensive in Gaza, which started in October 2023 after Hamas attacks on southern Israel, has caused over 46,000 Palestinian deaths and significant displacement within Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under domestic pressure to secure the deal, as divisions within his government threaten its approval.
On January 13, 2025, U.S. Central Command’s General Michael Kurilla arrived in Israel to hold urgent talks with Israeli officials amid significant progress in the ceasefire negotiations. During his visit, General Kurilla met with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi to discuss the region's evolving security situation and the implications of the ceasefire.
The involvement of high-level Israeli officials, including the Mossad director, highlights the urgency of the talks. Qatar’s spokesperson al-Ansari has expressed optimism, stating that most major issues have been resolved and that the two sides are closer to a deal than ever.
Despite this progress, some unresolved issues remain, and the next 24 hours are viewed as critical in determining whether a final agreement can be reached.
