Hezbollah announced it launched rockets at northern Israel on Saturday, including a military base near Haifa, after the Israeli military reported a wave of projectiles coming from Lebanon.
The group described the attack as a “large salvo” of advanced rockets that struck a military base east of Haifa, promising to escalate its assaults on Israel amid a war that began on September 23.
Earlier, Hezbollah stated that it had targeted an area north of Haifa with a barrage of rockets.
In Kiryat Ata, located in the Haifa district, five people were injured, mostly from shrapnel, according to a spokesperson from emergency service Magen David Adom. A rocket hit a three-story building and damaged two cars, prompting emergency teams to respond, as shown in AFP footage.
The strikes on Haifa coincided with Israel reporting a drone attack on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Caesarea, central Israel. Netanyahu's office confirmed that the prime minister and his wife were not in the residence at the time and that no one was harmed.
Throughout the morning, sirens sounded across Israel as Hezbollah launched rockets from different locations in Lebanon. The Iran-backed group had previously declared a new "escalatory phase" in its conflict with Israel on Thursday.
Late last month, Israel intensified its airstrikes on Lebanon and deployed ground troops following a year of sporadic cross-border skirmishes.
Lebanon's health ministry reported that two people died on Saturday due to an Israeli strike on a major highway north of Beirut, marking the first attack in that area since exchanges of fire began between Hezbollah and Israel last year.
The war, which started in late September, has resulted in at least 1,418 deaths in Lebanon, according to health ministry figures compiled by AFP, though the actual toll is believed to be higher.
