ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has called for the resignation of top officials from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), including Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sultan Akram Raja, following the Supreme Court’s (SC) ruling on the reserved seats case. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad after the SC's decision, which deemed the PTI-supported Sunni Ittehad Council eligible for reserved seats, PTI General Secretary Omar Ayub demanded the immediate resignation of the CEC and all four provincial election commissioners.
Ayub accused the ECP of deliberately removing PTI’s electoral symbol to disrupt the election process, labeling their actions as treason and suggesting that Article 6 of the Pakistani constitution be applied to the CEC. He emphasized PTI’s commitment to upholding the constitution and ensuring justice, and lauded his legal team’s efforts, calling it a victory for truth and justice.
Earlier, the SC overturned the decision to deny reserved seats to the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah delivered the 8-5 majority verdict on the petition filed by the Sunni Ittehad Council, a PTI ally.
Justices Athar Minallah, Shahid Waheed, Muneeb Akhtar, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Ayesha Malik, Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi, and Irfan Saadat Khan ruled in favor of the PTI.
The top court nullified the Peshawar High Court's order, which had upheld the ECP’s decision to deny reserved seats to the SIC.
The SC declared the ECP's allocation of reserved seats to the ruling coalition unconstitutional and ruled that the SIC is eligible for these seats.
The court also recognized PTI as a political party and instructed the Imran Khan-led party to submit a list of candidates for the reserved seats to the ECP within 15 days.
