KARACHI: A dangerously unstable building in Lyari’s Agra Taj Colony, which was evacuated earlier this month, has yet to be demolished, raising serious safety concerns.
The seven-story structure was declared hazardous by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) following the tragic collapse of another building nearby on July 4, which claimed 27 lives. In response, authorities sealed and vacated the Agra Taj Colony building on July 5, with demolition planned for July 7. However, no action has been taken since.
Adding to the confusion, sources reveal that the SBCA's warning notice painted on the building has been erased, and the owner has begun repainting the structure allegedly with the support of SBCA staff. Disturbingly, around 12 families are reportedly moving back into the building despite its unsafe condition.
Residents and observers are questioning why the SBCA has not yet followed through with demolition orders, especially given the area's recent tragedy. Following the July 4 incident, the authority had identified several other dilapidated buildings in Lyari and issued three-month eviction notices, but little visible action has followed.
Locals fear another disaster could be imminent if these dangerous structures are not dealt with urgently.
