Borgwardt, a 44-year-old husband and father of three, disappeared on August 12, sparking an intense search after his capsized kayak was found. Local authorities initially believed he had drowned, with additional clues such as his fishing rod and tacklebox being discovered. However, an investigation revealed that Borgwardt had crossed into Canada shortly after his disappearance, leading authorities to uncover his elaborate plan.
Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll confirmed in a press conference, “Great news: We know that he’s alive and well. The bad news is, we do not know where, exactly, Ryan is and he has not yet decided to return home.” Borgwardt later admitted to the authorities that he had meticulously planned his disappearance for months. He used a bike to escape to Madison, took a bus to Detroit, and eventually crossed into Canada before flying to Europe using a new passport.
Borgwardt also confessed to taking out a $375,000 life insurance policy and moving money into a foreign account. "He just had personal matters going on and he thought this was the right thing to do,” Sheriff Podoll explained, noting that Borgwardt had not yet provided a full explanation for abandoning his family.
While expressing regret, Borgwardt acknowledged the pain he caused his family and the extensive resources spent on the search. Podoll added, “Christmas is coming, and what better gift he could give his kids to be there for Christmas with them.”
