According to the NHTSA, the issue affects Mazda MX-5 Miatas manufactured between April 20, 2015, and November 2, 2023, encompassing nearly all current-generation MX-5 models. Mazda confirmed that 100% of the vehicles produced during this period are impacted by the defect. However, as of September 11, 2024, no accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported.
Additionally, 15,835 Fiat 124 Spiders, built between March 1, 2016, and August 31, 2020, and sharing the same platform, are also being recalled for the same sensor defect.
Mazda has notified its dealers, and owner notification letters are expected to be sent by November 17, 2024. Dealers will fix the issue by reprogramming the airbag sensor control module with updated software, and the repair will be provided at no cost to vehicle owners.
