The flight tracking app flightradar24 reveals that, on average, hundreds of departing flights experienced a delay of 25 minutes, while flight arrivals faced an eight-minute delay. Passengers at the airport have lodged complaints about being stranded for hours.
On Monday, Delhi airport authorities issued a flight advisory, urging passengers to contact their airlines for updated flight information.
"While landings and take-offs continue at Delhi airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected," the advisory read. CAT III runways make it possible for planes to land during poor visibility.
In December, fog and poor visibility in the city led to delays in over 100 flights. In January, the airport experienced significant travel chaos, prompting numerous individuals to express their grievances on social media regarding delays and cancellations.
On Wednesday morning, videos and photos from various parts of Delhi and its suburbs depicted a blanket of fog enveloping roads and obscuring buildings. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that visibility had plummeted to zero in several localities.
The IMD has forecast light rains or thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds, for Wednesday. The department also predicts moderate fog for the upcoming days.
While dense fog is typical in Delhi and the rest of North India during winters, the cold in Delhi this season has shattered numerous records.
According to an IMD report, Delhi has recorded the coldest January in 13 years, with a maximum temperature of 17.7°C. The second coldest January occurred nine years ago, in 2015 when the city recorded a maximum temperature of 17.9°C. The report adds that nights have also been the coldest this year since 2013.
