Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed hopes for a “new chapter” in relations with Indonesia during a meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This was Prabowo’s first international visit since taking office in October.
During their talks in Beijing, Xi emphasized China’s willingness to work closely with Indonesia on shared goals like self-reliance, solidarity, and cooperation for mutual benefit.
He highlighted the strong economic ties between the two countries, noting the significant investments by Chinese companies in Indonesia’s natural resources, especially the nickel industry.
Despite their cooperation, China and Indonesia have occasionally clashed over disputed areas in the South China Sea.
However, Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to a growing partnership, saying it would benefit both countries and contribute to peace and prosperity across Asia.
The meeting included a formal welcome for Prabowo at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, followed by the signing of agreements on maritime safety and water resources management.
Prabowo's visit to China also includes meetings with Premier Li Qiang and senior official Zhao Leji. After China, Prabowo plans to visit Washington, D.C., at the invitation of U.S. President Joe Biden, as part of a broader international tour that includes stops in Peru, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.
He has reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to a non-aligned foreign policy while aiming to engage more actively on the global stage.
