At least two people were killed and seven injured in an explosion near Nawan Killi, an area on the outskirts of the provincial capital Quetta, the police said on Saturday.
Rescue teams and law enforcement officials reached the scene immediately, while the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.
The nature of the blast is yet to be determined as security forces cordoned off the area and launched an investigation.
The country has been reeling under increased terrorist attacks targeting especially the law enforcers and security forces since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021, particularly in the bordering provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
The country witnessed a sharp increase in terror attacks in January 2025, surging by 42% compared to the previous month, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), a think tank.
Recent data shows that at least 74 militant attacks took place across the country, leading to 91 deaths. Among the victims were 35 security personnel, 20 civilians, and 36 militants. Additionally, 117 people were injured, including 53 members of the security forces, 54 civilians, and 10 militants.
Just a day earlier, Additional Deputy Commissioner Hidayat Buledi was martyred when armed attackers linked to Fitna al-Hindustan stormed the deputy commissioner's residence in Sorab city, Khuzdar district of Balochistan. According to spokesperson Shahid Rind, militants from the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) also looted a commercial bank in Sorab Bazaar and set fire to several government officials’ homes.
After the attack, security forces including the Frontier Corps, police, and Levies launched a search and clearance operation in the area.
Earlier, on May 21, a powerful blast near Zero Point in Khuzdar targeted a school bus, killing eight people, including five students, and injuring many others. The bus was carrying more than 40 students and was on its way to a school when it was attacked. The incident sparked condemnation from both within Pakistan and the international community. Balochistan, where the attack occurred, remains one of the most severely affected regions by terrorism.
According to a report by The News, quoting intelligence sources, India’s intelligence agency RAW has activated its proxy networks in Balochistan to incite violence and terrorism. Following the failure of a previous false flag operation in Pahalgam, RAW is allegedly using groups like the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), Fitna-al-Khawarij, and illegal Afghan nationals to launch attacks in areas such as Gwadar, Quetta, and Khuzdar.
In April, the Director General of ISPR, Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, also stated that India had activated its assets to escalate terrorist activities in Pakistan, presenting what he called "irrefutable evidence" of Indian state-sponsored terrorism.
