The Punjab government has introduced new subjects for matriculation, providing students with a wider range of options beyond the traditional science and arts streams.

Beginning this academic year, students can opt for matriculation in fields such as information technology, technology entrepreneurship, health sciences, agriculture science, and fashion designing.

This initiative aims to modernize the education system, aligning it with international standards and equipping students with skills that meet contemporary needs.

The Punjab education minister stated that these new courses represent a shift towards more practical, career-focused education, moving away from conventional learning methods.

Key features of new courses

-Students can now choose from streams like IT, health sciences, agriculture science, entrepreneurship, and fashion designing from Class IX.

-The new major courses will carry marks ranging from 100 to 150.

-Students will select their matriculation subjects at the beginning of the ninth grade.

-Major courses will be prominently mentioned on students’ result cards.

The decision has been met with widespread approval from citizens, many of whom have praised the government for its progressive and forward-thinking approach.

Parents and educators believe that these new subjects will empower students to develop specialized skills, better preparing them for a competitive global landscape. The School Education Department has instructed district education officers to compile lists of students interested in these new subjects for the current academic year.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikander Hayat highlighted that these courses are designed to equip students with modern skills and knowledge. He noted, “Previously, matriculation was only available in science and arts groups. This initiative marks a step towards aligning our education system with international standards,” adding that from this year onwards, students will have the option to choose from a wider variety of subjects.

With this innovative move, matriculation in Punjab is no longer confined to traditional streams. By offering career-oriented courses, the government aims to bridge the gap between education and the demands of the job market, ensuring that students are better prepared for the challenges of the future.
