Balochistan’s Caretaker Information Minister, Jan Achakzai, has declared the suspension of internet services near crucial polling stations in the province for the general elections slated for February 8, 2024.
Achakzai clarified that this step stems from a terrorism alert to secure the electoral process. Internet services will be temporarily halted as a precautionary measure. The suspension will impact regions like Turbat, Mach, Chaman, and others.
Emphasizing civilian safety as paramount, Achakzai expressed concerns over the potential misuse of social media platforms by terrorists to instigate violence during elections.
The Balochistan government had earlier imposed restrictions on public gatherings and election-related meetings due to increased risks, including the presence of a suspected female suicide bomber in Balochistan's governmental hub.
However, it's important to note that there is no directive for internet suspension in other parts of the country yet.
The minister added that “if any law-and-order situation arises anywhere in the country on polling day, the local administration will take a decision accordingly.”
Solangi urged citizens to exercise their voting rights responsibly, emphasizing that participation in the democratic process reflects their patriotism and commitment to the nation's democratic journey.
As Pakistan braces for the upcoming polls, concerns over pre-election violence remain a focal point of government attention.
