ISLAMABAD: Federal government has decided to increase the number of Supreme Court's judges from 17 to 23.
An important legislation regarding the Apex court judges may be passed out next week. The number of the SC judges would be increased through a private member's bill.
The Act 1997 would be amended to raise the strenght of judges under the proposed bill.
The bill suggested to raise the number of SC judges from 17 to 23. The strength of SC would be 22 judges except chief justice of Pakistan.
Additionally, the ruling coalition government has decided to introduce another bill in parliament concerning the judiciary. This bill, to be presented by Nur Alam Khan of JUI-F, aims to empower a larger bench to hear review appeals.
The bill proposes an amendment to Article 184(3) of the Constitution, allowing a larger bench to hear such appeals, with the amendment being applied retrospectively to past judgments.
Recently, it was reported that the ruling coalition is likely to pass significant legislation during a joint session of parliament, which is expected to be convened by the president next week. Sources indicate that the PML-N government, with the support of its allies, is expected to push through crucial legislation in the upcoming sessions.
Last week, key leaders from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, met in Islamabad to resolve differences. Insiders revealed that the two sides also discussed the current political situation in the country and various critical issues.
