ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to initiate consultations with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other political parties on addressing shortcomings in the 18th Constitutional Amendment.
According to official sources, the consultation process will continue during the ongoing session of the National Assembly. In the first phase, talks will be held with the PPP, and if the party agrees, dialogue will be expanded to include other parties.
Sources further said that if consensus is reached, the government plans to introduce the 27th Constitutional Amendment. With PPP’s support in the National Assembly, the government is expected to secure the two-thirds majority required to pass the amendment.
Government sources said that the Senate would need the support of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) for a two -thirds majority, many issues went to the provinces in the 18th Amendment but they could not be fully implemented. The rules and regulations of many ministries have not been finalized.
According to sources, amendment will also be proposed on the issue of financial sovereignty to the provinces, while amendments to increase the federal share in the NFC award will also be proposed.
Government sources added that the Cabinet Committee on Legislature is considering proposed proposals unless there is a consensus, the negotiation process will be kept confidential.
