Pakistan, the world's fifth-largest democracy, conducted its 2024 elections on Thursday. The polling exercise, touted as the most expensive in the country's history, witnessed a massive voter turnout as citizens cast their ballots to choose representatives for the next five years.

Prominent political parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), along with numerous independent candidates, some backed by PTI, are expected to secure victories in major national and provincial constituencies.

As the voting concluded in Sindh's 130 constituencies, the atmosphere became charged with anticipation, reflecting the high stakes in the province's electoral landscape.

Sindh, with a substantial population of 46.126 million, played a pivotal role in the electoral arena. Official figures revealed 26,994,769 registered voters, with 54.13% being male (14.612 million) and 45.87% female (12.382 million).

The Sindh Assembly featured 130 seats, comprising 130 general seats, 29 reserved for women, and 9 earmarked for minority communities. Additionally, the province contributed 75 seats to the National Assembly, including 61 general seats and 14 reserved for women.

A robust security apparatus was in place with 14,052 polling buildings and 19,008 polling stations strategically categorized as highly sensitive, sensitive, and normal. Out of these, 4,498 buildings were labeled highly sensitive, 4,834 as sensitive, and 4,720 as normal.

A comprehensive security deployment of 43,156 police personnel and volunteers ensured the protection of all polling stations, buildings, and electoral materials. This included 95,400 personnel securing polling stations, with 10,648 forming a quick response force. Additionally, 37,108 volunteers and private security guards were enlisted to enhance security measures.

The early results from the 2024 elections indicate a tight race, keeping the nation on edge as the counting of votes is underway. The outcome will shape the political landscape for the next five years, determining the composition of the Sindh Assembly and the National Assembly, and potentially influencing the future leadership of the province.
