The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) has decided to raise the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fares by 5 to 10 rupees to help reduce the financial losses of the BRT system.

Annual Subsidy and Expected Savings
The BRT gets over three and a half billion rupees each year to help cover costs. With the new increase in fares, KPUMA expects to cut the yearly shortfall by 500 million rupees. This change is important to keep the BRT running smoothly.Route-Specific Fare Increases
The fare increase varies across different routes. On several routes, fares have been increased by 5 rupees, while others have seen a 10 rupee hike. Notably, the fare from Chamkani to Hayatabad has been raised from 50 rupees to 60 rupees.Discounts and Free Travel
Despite the increase, KPUMA has ensured that senior citizens and young children benefit from significant concessions. Senior citizens over the age of 60 will receive a 50% discount on fares. Additionally, children under the age of five will continue to travel for free on the BRT.Reason for Fare Hike
The main reason for the fare hike is the increase in petrol prices, which has greatly raised the BRT's running costs. The decision was approved at a recent board meeting led by the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. 4oThe fare hike is needed to keep the BRT system in Peshawar running smoothly and efficiently. Although the prices are going up to help with financial issues, KPUMA is still dedicated to offering affordable and reliable transportation for the people of Peshawar.
