ISLAMABAD – The federal cabinet has sanctioned a significant increase of Rs5.72 per unit in the NEPRA base tariff, effective from July 2024, in accordance with a condition set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Reports said the approval was taken from the cabinet members through circulation summary, adding that the decision would be sent to Nepra for uniform tariff.
The federal government will issue a notification to implement it if the increase in base tariff get nod from Nepra.
The government is obligated to raise the tariff by July 10 to meet the conditions set by the global lender for a bailout package. This move will place an additional burden of Rs600 billion on electricity consumers. Nepra has approved an increase in the average basic electricity tariff for the 2024-25 financial year, raising it from the current Rs29.78 to Rs35.50 per unit.
Electricity Bill Expected from July 2024
If the Nepra announces new uniform tariff after approving increase in base rate, the electricity bills would be sent to people at the rate of Rs35.50 per unit.It means people will have to pay additional amount of Rs5.72 per unit on July 2024 bills if the base tariff is increased.
