After France’s recent declaration, the United Kingdom is now also considering formally recognizing Palestine as an independent state. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made this announcement during a press briefing following an emergency cabinet meeting, signaling a potential policy shift that could take effect as early as September.
Starmer stressed that if the situation in Gaza does not improve, Britain will take a decisive step. “If a path toward lasting peace is not established, the UK will recognize the State of Palestine by September,” he stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Israel must immediately halt its military operations in Gaza and allow the United Nations to deliver humanitarian aid. He further asserted that if Israel refuses, the UK will make its own decision independently.

Addressing internal discussions, Starmer revealed that his cabinet has already started preparations for recognition, likely before the UN General Assembly convenes. He also outlined conditions for Hamas, demanding the release of all hostages, disarmament, and a clear declaration that it will no longer be part of Gaza’s governing structure.
The UK has long supported a two-state solution, but previously held that formal recognition should come as part of a mutual agreement between both parties. However, with increasing international and domestic pressure, this stance is shifting.
Over 250 members of Parliament have signed a joint letter urging the UK government to officially recognize the Palestinian state. If carried through, Britain would become the first major Western power after France to take such a step in support of Palestinian statehood.
