LAHORE: Glenn Phillips' century powered New Zealand to a formidable total of 330/6 against Pakistan in the opening match of the tri-nation ODI series at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.
Opting to bat first, New Zealand overcame early setbacks as Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, and Phillips played key roles in setting a competitive target.
Pakistan struck early when Shaheen Shah Afridi removed Will Young for a duck in the first over. Rachin Ravindra and Williamson attempted to rebuild, adding 35 runs before Abrar Ahmed dismissed Ravindra for 25 off 19 balls.
Williamson then partnered with Mitchell in a crucial 95-run stand for the third wicket, scoring 58 off 89 deliveries, including seven boundaries, before falling to Shaheen. Tom Latham’s dismissal for a duck by Haris Rauf left New Zealand at 135/4 in 27.1 overs.
Mitchell, displaying resilience, scored 81 off 84 balls, smashing two fours and four sixes. He formed a 65-run partnership with Phillips before being dismissed by Abrar in the 38th over.
Phillips, however, dominated the final phase of the innings, smashing an unbeaten 106 off 74 balls, featuring six fours and seven sixes. His 54-run stand with Michael Bracewell (31 off 23) further strengthened New Zealand’s total.
For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi led the bowling attack with three wickets, while Abrar Ahmed took two and Haris Rauf claimed one.
The tri-nation series, featuring Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa, runs from February 8 to 14 at Gaddafi Stadium and National Bank Stadium, serving as preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
