Nadeem Baig, one of Pakistan’s most respected film and television actors, has worked in countless hit films like Dillagi, Aina, Mukhra, Dehleez, Shararat, Shama, Bulandi, and many more. His real name is Mirza Nazir Baig, and at 84 years old, he continues to be admired as a legend of the industry. He even appeared in Hum TV’s drama Mol in 2014.
Recently, in a candid interview with journalist Ambreen Fatima, Nadeem Baig spoke about the decline of the Pakistani film industry and also shared his thoughts on the similarities between films and dramas being made today.
He said the biggest reason for the downfall is the loss of legendary filmmakers and the fact that most of today’s filmmakers come from television. “At least they are making films,” he added, “but we all know the state of our industry—cinemas have shut down, studios have disappeared, and the whole film culture is gone. We don’t have the facilities or resources. Still, we should be thankful to those who are doing whatever they can.”
Explaining further, he pointed out that the film industry lost a huge market after the separation of East Pakistan. “Studios started closing, there were no film academies, and ticket prices went beyond what the lower-middle class, the main cinema-going audience, could afford. We have talent, but it’s not being used the right way.”
Nadeem Baig expressed his sorrow over how old film studios have now turned into commercial plots. “The atmosphere has completely changed. There are no studios left, no real activity, and very few films are being made. Only Evernew Studio has somehow managed to survive in its original form,” he said sadly.
