The Punjab government has announced that a tram service will start in Lahore in February next year.
Punjab’s Transport Minister, Bilal Akbar, said the initial tram trial was successful, and the new line from Thokar to Harbanspura will begin running in February 2026. Each tram will carry up to 270 passengers, and the project is expected to cost $3 million.
He also mentioned that officials from Punjab NESPAK and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority recently visited China to work on the project.
Bilal Akbar added that metro train projects are also planned for Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The Faisalabad metro is designed to serve 300,000 passengers daily, while the Gujranwala metro will handle about 140,000 commuters each day. The Faisalabad Metro will cost $110 million, and the Gujranwala Metro will require $50 million.
The minister said rising pollution from motorcycles and other vehicles in Lahore is a serious issue, and these tram and metro projects are part of the government’s efforts to tackle environmental problems.
