ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Friday announced the launch of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based application developed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to make immigration faster and more secure.
The project will first be tested at Islamabad International Airport. According to the minister, the system will help reduce waiting times at airports while also preventing human trafficking. “This is a timely step to save passengers from long queues and ensure their safety,” Naqvi said.
He announced during a visit to FIA Headquarters in Islamabad, where he chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials. Naqvi directed the release of funds to upgrade FIA’s IT systems and ordered the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to hand over land for the FIA Academy without delay. To overcome staff shortages, he also instructed immediate recruitment against all vacant posts. “I will provide the resources, but performance is your responsibility,” he told FIA officers.
FIA Director General Raja Riffat Mukhtar briefed the minister on ongoing reforms, including digitization of the agency, introduction of an e-office system, and new notices with QR codes for transparency.
Meanwhile, on the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the government has decided to set up separate immigration counters for foreign passengers at all international airports. This move is aimed at promoting tourism, encouraging investment, and making travel easier. Officials said the step would not only help international visitors but also speed up the immigration process for Pakistanis returning home.
