KARACHI: Law enforcement authorities on Sunday arrested over 10 individuals near Metropole, bringing the total number of arrests for violating Section 144 to more than 60.
According to reports, police and Rangers successfully dispersed protesters from Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) who had gathered in the Metropole area, as Karachi's administration enforced Section 144 across the city for four days.
The situation escalated when violence broke out, leading to injuries of five people, including police officers, due to aerial firing and stone pelting. Tragically, one individual lost their life and was later shifted to Jinnah Hospital by rescue services.
More than 10 individuals were apprehended at the Metropole roundabout, contributing to the over 60 total arrests for violating Section 144. The situation worsened when protesters set a police vehicle on fire.
Sindh's Interior Minister, Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar, explained that law enforcement intervened to prevent clashes, leading to the arrest of those violating the city's restrictions.
Both Karachi's Commissioner and Sindh’s Home Minister had implemented Section 144 to limit public gatherings, anticipating potential conflicts due to simultaneous protests called by civil society groups and a religious party.
In a related matter, Minister Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar ordered an investigation into reports of mistreatment of journalists and others by the police during the protest, assuring that strict action would be taken against those responsible for violence against media personnel.
Authorities remain on high alert, vowing to take firm action against those who violate the law.
