ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday introduced the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2025, which aims to make the unfair eviction of women from their homes a punishable crime.
The bill, presented by PPP MNA Sharmila Faruqui, states that if a husband or any family member forces a woman out of her home without a valid reason, they could face three to six months in prison and a fine of up to Rs200,000. A first-class magistrate would hear such cases.
The proposed law aims to close a major gap in women’s legal protection, highlighting that power imbalances and outdated beliefs promoting male dominance place many women in Pakistan at risk of being thrown out of their homes.
If passed, this amendment would affirm a woman’s right to feel safe and secure in her own home. It would give women legal options to stand against domestic abuse without the fear of losing their shelter, helping them live with dignity and equality.
The bill also aims to shift societal attitudes by challenging traditional gender roles and holding husbands accountable. By criminalizing unlawful eviction, the law delivers a strong message that society will not tolerate such actions. The proposed penalties aim to deter violations and promote a culture of respect, safety, and equality within households.
