KARACHI: The death toll from rain-related incidents in Karachi has climbed to 15 as the city continues to deal with the aftermath of Tuesday’s heavy monsoon showers and urban flooding, according to news.
Rescue officials said five people were killed when a wall collapsed in Gulistan-e-Johar, while a child lost his life in a similar incident in Orangi Town. Several others died from electrocution across the city, one in New Karachi, two in DHA, and another near Shahrah-e-Faisal.
Two drowning victims were also recovered, one from a drain near Guru Mandir and another from Khameeso Goth. In addition, two people lost their lives near Natha Khan. A fire at a petrol pump near Malir 15 left one person dead from severe burns.
The heavy rainfall flooded many neighborhoods, leaving roads underwater and disrupting daily life across the city.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, during an emergency visit, said Karachi will need to be dug up again to build a modern 100-meter rainwater drainage system. He stressed that the city urgently needs a proper drainage network to reduce the risk of future flooding.
Murad chaired an emergency meeting to review the situation and direct dewatering operations. He urged authorities to remain alert as more rainfall is expected and assured citizens that efforts are underway to restore normalcy.
