ISLAMABAD: Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has called the joint session of the parliament on Saturday at ten in the morning.
The Speaker called the joint session in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (b) of Rule 9 of the Presidential Election Rules, 1988.
On the other hand, Asif Ali Zardari, the joint candidate of PPP and the PML-N and Sunni Ittehad Council's candidate Mahmood Khan Achakzai are vying for the office of President.
Their nomination papers were filed today for the presidential elections to be held on the 9th of this month.
The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on Monday.
The president is elected by an electoral college comprising members of the Senate, National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies. Voting is held through a secret ballot.
Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif has been elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Announcing the results, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said Shehbaz Sharif, the joint candidate of PML-N and allied parties, secured two hundred and one votes. Sunni Ittehad Council’s candidate Omar Ayub Khan bagged ninety-two votes.
It is the second time that Shehbaz Sharif has been elected as the Prime Minister of the country.
Chief of Balochistan National Party (Mengal) Akhtar Mengal who was present in the house abstained from voting.
Shehbaz Sharif later went to the desks of the allied parties to express his gratitude to them.
Sunni Ittehad Council candidate Omar Ayub Khan thanked his party lawmakers for supporting him.
The House has been adjourned to meet again on Monday at 11:00 am.
