ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has officially announced a gas price increase for most consumers, power plants, and industrial sectors, starting from July 1, 2025.
This announcement comes through a formal notification as part of the government’s plan to align electricity rates with cost recovery and regulatory requirements.
The notification states that gas prices for domestic consumers based on tiered rates will not change. However, monthly charges for households will go up.
People with some protection will now pay Rs600 per month instead of Rs400, and those without protection will see their monthly fees rise from Rs1,000 to Rs1,500. Households using more than 1.5 cubic meters of gas will face higher fixed charges, increasing from Rs2,000 to Rs2,400.
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, approved this updated pricing during their recent meeting. The ECC emphasized keeping gas affordable for households while ensuring the gas sector remains financially stable.
The OGRA price hike also includes a 10% increase in gas tariffs for power plants and industrial users. This change aligns with agreements made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reduce energy subsidies and focus support on low-income consumers.
Gas prices for commercial users, tandoors, CNG stations, cement, and fertilizer industries will stay the same, offering some relief to important economic sectors.
This gas price increase is part of a larger plan to reduce circular debt in the energy sector and ensure a steady gas supply for priority users.
Earlier, OGRA reduced the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by Rs4.62. According to their recent notification, LPG rates have dropped to Rs240.43 per kilogram after this reduction.
