Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that he would make efforts to end what he described as an ongoing war between Pakistan and Afghanistan, adding that he plans to revisit the issue after his current trip to the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters before departing for a peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, Trump said, “I’m aware there’s a war going on between Pakistan and Afghanistan. I’ll have to look into it once I return. I’ll make another attempt because I’m an expert at resolving wars.”
Trump also claimed credit for having previously de-escalated tensions between Pakistan and India, stating that he used economic pressure and tariffs to bring the two nuclear neighbors back from the brink. While no active war currently exists between Pakistan and Afghanistan, sporadic border clashes and tensions have persisted for years.
On the Gaza conflict, Trump asserted that the war “has ended” and announced plans for a “Board of Peace” to oversee the ceasefire. He expressed optimism about the early release of hostages and praised Qatar for its mediation efforts in the region.
“The ceasefire in Gaza will hold, and the release of hostages might happen a little earlier than expected,” Trump told reporters.
Commenting on the ongoing war in Ukraine, Trump made a controversial remark, suggesting that if the war did not end soon, he might consider sending Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv — a position that could shift the dynamics of U.S. involvement in the conflict.
As part of his Middle East tour, Trump will first visit Israel, where he is expected to meet with recently released hostages and deliver a speech at the Knesset. He will also hold meetings with senior Israeli political and military leaders.
Trump’s final stop will be the Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt, where leaders from over 20 countries are gathering to finalize a permanent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. A broader regional security agreement involving Arab nations and Israel is also expected to be on the agenda.
