Known for its independent streak, Styopka often roamed freely around the neighborhood. That evening, Ukhin found the feline and brought it home, but for reasons yet unknown, the cat scratched his leg severely, reportedly severing a vein or artery.
At approximately 11 p.m., a desperate Ukhin called his neighbor, reporting profuse bleeding. The neighbor attempted to assist but called emergency services after realizing Ukhin's condition was worsening, likely exacerbated by his diabetes and blood-clotting issues. Unfortunately, when medical personnel arrived, they could only confirm Ukhin’s death.
“Around 11 p.m., a man called 112 to report that his friend was bleeding from his leg due to a torn vein. The doctors who arrived only confirmed the man’s death, which the police received a telephone message about,” a police spokesperson told Kosomolskaya Pravda, emphasizing, “There was definitely no crime there.”
Investigators are probing how Styopka, described as a “harmless cat” by Ukhin’s wife, inflicted a fatal wound. “She can’t imagine her scratching him to death,” police said. While Styopka is a large cat, such a deadly injury is highly unusual for a house pet.
