Islamabad: A major flood alert has been issued across Pakistan as a robust monsoon system is poised to bring intense downpours and thunderstorms to most of the country from today until July 17. This latest weather phenomenon signals a critical period, with national and provincial disaster management authorities escalating warnings for possible inundation.
From today until July 17, areas including Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Eastern Balochistan are forecast to receive significant rainfall. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert, urging caution due to the anticipated deluges.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued a nationwide alert for severe rains and potential flooding across most cities from July 13 to July 17. A rise in water levels is expected in hill torrents and major rivers.
According to the NDMA, increased water flow is anticipated in the Kabul, Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers. Mild flooding is expected at Tarbela, Taunsa, and Guddu barrages, while Kalabagh and Chashma barrages may experience moderate flooding.
Severe rainfall could lead to moderate flood conditions at Taunsa Barrage. There's also a risk of mild flooding at Marala and Khanki on the Chenab River, and at Nowshera on the Kabul River. Hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur are also likely to see increased water flow.
The NDMA statement further indicates a possibility of flash floods in the Swat and Panjkora rivers and their adjacent nullahs. Similarly, nullahs in Jhal Magsi, Kacchi, Sibi, Qila Saifullah, Zhob, and Musakhel are expected to experience increased water flow. Localized flash floods are also feared in Khuzdar, Awaran, Lasbela, and Kalat.
According to the NDMA “Tarbela Dam is 74% full, while Mangla Dam has reached 44% capacity." They also advised, "Populations living near rivers and nullahs should exercise extreme caution during heavy rains and at night. Avoid crossing nullahs, bridges, and submerged roads in case of strong currents."
As Pakistan braces for this powerful monsoon spell, authorities are urging widespread vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines. The alerts highlight the potential for significant disruption and the critical need for communities to remain aware of rising water levels and localized flood risks to ensure their safety and minimize potential damage.
