ISLAMABAD: Following the announcement of the Budget 2024-25, the federal government further burdened inflation-hit citizens with a Rs5.72 per unit increase in the power tariff.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) announced that the average electricity tariff will rise from the current Rs29.78 per unit to Rs35.50 per unit. The federal government will decide whether this increase will be implemented all at once or gradually.
Previously, the basic electricity tariff was increased to Rs7.50 per unit in the current financial year, up from Rs7.91 per unit in the last fiscal year. The new surge in the power tariff will take effect from July 1.
Earlier, Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb presented Pakistan’s budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, with a total outlay of Rs18.877 trillion.
The National Assembly (NA) session began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was also in attendance.
Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council stood on their desks, raised slogans against the government and PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, and tore copies of the Finance Bill 2025.
