The Antonov An-225, known in Ukrainian as Mriya, meaning “dream,” holds the title of the world’s largest operational cargo aircraft. With its extraordinary size and unmatched design, this giant continues to inspire awe around the world.
The plane is 84 meters long, 18 meters tall, and has an incredible wingspan of 88 meters, almost as tall as a six-story building. Powered by six engines, it is the only aircraft in the world with a cargo capacity of 250 tons and a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tons. Even the Airbus A380, the world’s biggest passenger jet, looks small in comparison.
The Soviet Union built the An-225 in 1988 to transport its Buran space shuttle from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome. In 1989, it set 106 world records in a single day for weight, distance, and altitude. After the fall of the Soviet Union, authorities grounded it but brought it back to service in 2001 for commercial cargo flights.
In recent years, the An-225 took on South America’s largest cargo mission, transporting massive power plant boilers from Chile to Bolivia. Each boiler weighed 300 tons, split into two parts, requiring 12 flights across the Andes Mountains at heights of 6,500 meters. The flights lasted only 90 minutes, but loading and unloading took hours of careful work.

The plane’s nose lifts upward to allow heavy cargo inside, supported by strong stabilizers. A special rail system and cranes move loads of up to 150 tons into its hold. A single mistake could cause damage worth millions, so the crew operates with extreme skill and precision.
Despite its size, the cockpit still has a “retro” look with mostly analog systems, though engineers continuously upgrade it to modern standards. Every part is designed for easy repair anywhere in the world.
