Washington : U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that several European leaders will travel to Washington early this week to discuss efforts to end the war in Ukraine. He added that he also plans to speak “soon” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Certain European leaders are coming over to our country on Monday or Tuesday individually,” Trump told reporters after returning from the U.S. Open in New York. He did not name the leaders, and the White House declined to provide further details.
Trump expressed frustration over the state of the conflict following a massive overnight Russian assault that killed at least four people and set Kyiv’s main government building ablaze. “The Russia-Ukraine situation — we’re going to get it done,” he said.
New Sanctions and Energy Pressure:
The president signaled his administration is preparing a new round of sanctions against Moscow, including secondary tariffs on countries still trading with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the move, calling it “the right approach” and urging European nations to halt all energy imports from Russia.
“We have to stop buying any kind of energy from Russia,” Zelensky told ABC News. “We can’t have any deals if we want to stop them.”
Ukrainian officials said air defenses repelled drone attacks overnight in multiple regions, but falling debris from Russian drones set several high-rise buildings on fire in Kyiv, killing at least three people — an infant, a young woman and an elderly woman — and injuring 11 others, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Zelensky on September 6 rejected an offer from Putin to travel to Moscow for peace talks, instead challenging the Russian leader to visit Kyiv. “I can’t go to Moscow when my country’s under missiles and attack each day,” he said.
Energy Revenues Under Scrutiny:
Russia has earned nearly $1 trillion from oil and gas sales since its full-scale invasion in 2022, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air. While the EU has scaled back purchases, China and India remain major buyers. Last month, Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Indian imports, drawing criticism from New Delhi, which vowed to pursue “the best deal” for its citizens.
Trump’s comments came a day after Russia launched its largest aerial bombardment of the war, firing more than 800 drones and 13 missiles.
