Bombay (India): The Bombay High Court on Monday, July 21,, has overturned the convictions of 12 individuals involved in the 2006 Mumbai local train bombings.
The court cited a lack of sufficient evidence, stating that the prosecution had "utterly failed" to prove the case against the accused.
This verdict arrives after nearly two decades since the devastating attacks that struck Mumbai’s Western Railway corridor. On July 11, 2006, seven bombs exploded at different locations within the Mumbai local train network, resulting in over 180 fatalities and numerous injuries.
A bench comprising Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak noted that the prosecution was unable to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The court scrutinized the testimonies of witnesses, many of whom the judges found unreliable.
It highlighted that witnesses, including taxi drivers and train passengers, had difficulty recalling details after nearly 100 days since the incident, undermining the credibility of their statements.
